Services for hip-hop artist to be held today

Ralph Chimon Davis, better known on Athens' hip-hop scene by his performer name "Figaro," died Monday. He was 31.

Although Davis hadn't performed or recorded in more than a year, taking time off to spend with his family, friends and fellow musicians remember him as an important part of the Athens hip-hop community.

"It's a gigantic loss," said Dwayne Gardner, owner and general manager of Club Aftermath in Athens, formerly Insomnia, where Davis has played shows.

Davis opened for touring acts including Busta Rhymes, Young Jeezy, Bo Hagen, Killer Mike, Maceo and Pastor Troy, and often played in Atlanta. He was the first artist Gardner signed to his Black Mane records label.

"He had a realness, and a vision of trying to bring hip-hop back to its roots," Gardner said, adding Davis helped bridge the gap between the local rap scene and the college rap scene. "He was one of the few artists who could flip-flop between both sides."
